Rob Lycett
Rob Lycett is an artist and former art & design educator who lives in the Upper Calder Valley and currently has a studio in Hebden Bridge.
His practice is an ongoing exploration of 'art-machines' (writing, drawing) and their 'residua' (the remains of a process). Many of these 'machines' use fragments of cultural material, collected over a number of years and held within archives and databases. Chance and order play a significant part in Rob’s practice. Decisions are often arbitrary. Repetition is essential. Mistakes are embraced.
Rob’s work spans films, books, photographs, motion graphics, drawings, text, typographic objects, digital installations, custom software, sound and live performances. These creative acts are often informed/disrupted by the literary constraints of the Oulipo, the aleatory compositions of John Cage, and Umberto Eco's 'Open Work'.
Rob Lycett’s practice is literally 'an open situation, in movement. A work in progress' (Eco, 1960).
In September, 2025, Rob had a solo exhibition at In a Land Gallery (Linden Mill, Hebden Bridge), entitled ‘residua.txt: recent works’.
